God Bless Aleatoria
by Thomas Santoro Mackin
is this the patria of your paterfamilias
or is it the adopted nation of opportunity?
is this the idiom of your ancestors
or is it the lingua frankly overtaken
slowly eroding the patrimonial mothertongue
& leaving you with maybe some expressions
is it chance? is it a domino-fall
that you talk like you do, believe, behave,
call yourself a name, citizen of a nation,
can you go back? can you ever go back?
god take me back three generations
I don’t want to dream this dream anymore
or take me three generations ahead
& let the grandkids teach me a better language
