Overheard

by Anne Louise Phillips

“Welcome to the Tunnel of the Underworld…. Or whatever…” the college student sighed, wishing he were working a cooler job.

“Lame,” said a six-year-old, as he wiggled his tooth and stared at the dripping walls of the supposed catacomb.

“Lame,” said his older sister, wondering if the tour guide had noticed her sunflower tattoo.

“Lame,” said their parents, thinking of the money they spent to get into this dump.

And then, in a whisper, “Lame,” said the ghost hiding in the walls, a silvery tear streaking down his cheek.
